Why It's So Important to Flameproof

When someone starts a business, the list of what needs to be done seems like it goes on forever. There are degrees of importance, from the greatest to the least.  Somewhere on that list is 'public safety.' Under the umbrella of public safety is fire safety - and part of that is flameproofing. While flameproofing often boils down to legal requirements, there are many reasons why this is so important to have done at your place of business.

Flameproofing is so vital because, very simply, it is one of the top ways to keep a fire from raging out of control, should one happen.  It's common for all of us to think  "It could never happen to me," but no one intentionally has a fire; they are accidents. And by nature, accidents are unexpected.  The best way to be prepared for a fire is to be prepared for the unexpected.  When items are flameproofed, they do not support combustion.  This means that they burn more slowly and they do not contribute to the spread of fire.  This allows those inside enough time to safely evacuate.

There are also the legal reasons to consider in regards to flameproofing.  The law requires that places where the public gathers are properly flameproofed. Having certain items flameproofed (such as curtains, drapes, artistic hangings) is a requirement in order for a business to obtain its Certificate of Occupancy.  The FDNY, the Health Department, the Building Department, and insurance carriers all require that businesses have in their possession a flameproofing affidavit, which serves as proof that fireproofing treatments were properly performed. Neglecting to have this important document will cost in time and money, for sure.

Finally, another reason why flameproofing is such a critical action is that it provides an extra measure of protection for the public when they visit your business. As the owner, it's your obligation to provide safety to those you serve.  Part of this protection is fire safety, which is enhanced through the process of flameproofing.  Issues of negligence and liability could arise if there is a failure to have your business location treated with fire retardants. If a fire ever occurs, you will have the reassurance that you provided for all aspects of safety for your patrons and employees. This will give you great peace of mind that whatever accident may have occurred, it was not worsened due to negligence.  Being able to sleep at night without regret is a huge payoff.

Everyone in business understands that the demands seem never-ending.  However, we also understand that there are certain areas where shortcuts should not be taken. Having your business treated with flame repellents is definitely one of those areas. Flameproofing may not be on the forefront of your mind, but its importance cannot be overstated.  It is absolutely vital to the protection of human life and property to have this done.
