What are Best Practices in the Flameproofing Industry?

In every business or industry, no matter what it is, there’s a set of rules, written or unwritten, for the best way of performing tasks or meeting goals.  This is known as ‘industry best practices.’ The experts in a certain field have tested certain methods and come up with what works best. In flameproofing, this is true also. There are a certain set of standards in the flameproofing industry that yield the best results. While not everyone really needs to know flameproofing best practices, if you are needing flameproofing services, it’s definitely a good idea to have some inside info so you know you’re getting a first-rate job.

When your business location is having flameproofing treatments performed, there are certain things you can keep your eyes opened for. From the standpoint of the FDNY, these are some of the best practices when fire retardant treatments are being done:

  1. After a fabric or object has been soaked or coated with fire retardants, it should dry for 24 hours. Once fully dry, a field flame test needs to be performed on it. This will test for flame resistance. If there was inadequate drying time, results could be compromised, which could mean that additional treatments would be required.
  2. Field flame tests need to be performed on objects or materials marked as inherently non-combustible or ones that have already been flameproofed. This ensures that those items are actually flame resistant. As a business owner, you should witness this test being performed and see that the flameproofing employee is a C-15 Certificate of Fitness holder.
  3. You should be given instructions on how to care for and handle the treated items following flameproofing. With most items, additional treatments are needed once objects or fabrics have been dry-cleaned, washed, etc. In fact, the affidavit for flameproofing requires additional treatment after being handled in that manner.
  4. The company you choose should be up-to-date with the latest information on the FDNY website. Pertinent information is being posted there all the time, and the company you select should be familiar with all updates.
  5. There are limitations with flameproofing, and the company you hire should inform you regarding that. Most people incorrectly think that if an item has been flameproofed, it will never catch fire. What is true is that a flameproofed item has a slower burn rate and doesn’t contribute to the spread of fire. This is important because it gives firefighters more time to arrive on the scene as well as allows those inside a building to safely evacuate.
