Flameproofing and Its Role in Saving Lives

When someone determines to take a risk and launch a business, he or she quickly discovers just how many tiny particulars must be addressed. There are innumerable legal, practical and safety issues that occur just in the early stages alone, before the business can even be up and running, and just as many  - or more - in the everyday functions and growth periods as well. Fire prevention and flameproofing fall under the 'safety' category, and a business owner could wonder, even though it’s a legal requirement, if flameproofing treatments really work or if they’re just another money-draining hoop you’re forced to jump through. Today, we intend to demonstrate just how important flameproofing really is for a business and the saving of lives.

The way flameproofing works is like this:

First, there needs to be a determination as to which objects are able to be treated with flame repellent chemicals, which ones are mandated to be, and which ones do not need to be treated because they’re already inherently fire resistant. When all that is worked out, the required materials or items must be soaked in or coated with flame repellent chemicals. What this does is, should there be an unfortunate fire, prevents these treated items from supporting combustion or contributing to the spread of a fire. This will keep a fire contained and minimize the spread and severity of a fire. It also provides life-saving time for the fire department to reach the fire and extinguish the flames before they morph into a devastating event.

Generally speaking, most fires that occur are accidental. Flameproofing offers that additional level of protection that can preserve both human life and valuable property and assets. Objects that receive flameproofing treatments may still change in form and have damage; however, they’re no longer a factor in the intensity and spread of fire. Because the severity is minimized, both life and property can be saved.

A study was performed in the U.K. to see if flameproofing actually made a difference. An article published by the Scientific American stated that in fires occurred the U.K., there were fewer deaths associated with fires when flame repellents were used and flameproofing treatments had occurred prior. Because these treatments were performed, lives were able to be saved both in homes and at business properties.
