Guidelines for Fire Safety in Hotels

As New Yorkers, we have some of the most prestigious and luxurious hotels on the planet.  People from all over the world come to New York City to experience our tourist attractions as well as stay in our hotels. However, because there is such a high number of people crossing in and out of hotels on a daily basis, it’s imperative that hotel owners are in compliance with FDNY fire codes and regulations and that their fire safety protection mechanisms are up to date. Today, we’ll be discussing what a hotel owner needs to be responsible for and what hotel guests can expect in terms of fire safety.

For a hotel to be open to the public and ready for business, it must have specific permits, which means it must satisfy the demands of the FDNY, the Health Department, and the Building Department. Among many details on an already tremendous list of specifications is the requirement of flameproofing. Flameproofing is when articles and fabrics used for artistic decoration must either be soaked in or coated with flame repellent chemicals or they must be intrinsically flame-resistant. Objects included in this category would be curtains, drapes, carpets, upholstery, greens, hangings, holiday decor, etc. If a fire were to transpire in the hotel, those objects would burn, but they wouldn't be flammable, meaning they are considered non-factors in the scope and severity of the fire and help keep it localized.

In addition to flameproofing, there are other fire safety standards in hotels. Smoke detectors are mandated to be in every guest room. If there should be a fire in the building, all rooms would be signaled and directed to evacuate the hotel. Hotels are also constructed with firewalls separating each room. This nonflammable sheetrock prohibits an existing fire from expanding to the neighboring rooms, which could result in setting the entire building on fire. In addition, automatic fire sprinklers are mandated as well as visible fire exits and a sufficient number of emergency exits.

A hotel owner never expects to have a fire, but by making sure these requirements are adhered to, we can hope for the best conceivable outcome should an accidental fire transpire. At Bronx Flameproofing, we are pleased to work with hotel owners in the Bronx and all over New York City and the Greater Metro NY area.
