Fires that Involve Upholstered Furniture

Running a business can sometimes be all the logistical nuts and bolts, but something that contributes to the aesthetics, such as decorating, can break up some of the monotony. And the feeling a customer gets from the atmosphere of a business space shouldn’t be underestimated. However, what should also be considered is that often, many of those decorations can be a fire hazard. And often, upholstered furniture is the main culprit.

During the years 2010-2014, the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) conducted research surrounding fires that involved upholstered furniture. These were home fires, but this easily translates to office fires, as both places house upholstered furniture.

Each year, 5,300 fires occurred where upholstered furniture was the first thing to go up in flames. In these fires, 440 people perished and 700 were hurt. The damage in property loss was to the tune of $269 million every year.

These fires from upholstered furniture were responsible for 2% of the overall fires but resulted in 18% of the deaths from fires each year.

The main cause of ignition was smoking material, accounting for 1 death per 6 fires.

Lighters, matches, and candles were the igniters 20% of the time and electrical appliances, panels, and lighting played a role 12% of the time. Portable and fixed heaters also were fire starters 11% of the time.

As business owners, it’s important to realize that all of the things that sparked the fire to upholstered furniture are also present in office space, creating similar risk factors.

In those home fires, flameproofing could have made a large difference, and as required by law, it plays a significant role in fire protection in the office, too.
